"A Master Bathroom Transformation"
Designer’s Project Story:
Quite a few years after helping Nita remodel her kitchen, we started work on her Master Bathroom, Master Closet, and replaced porcelain tile flooring throughout the home with a faux wood ceramic tile. The process began by taking a look at her existing space & interviewing her specific needs and personal tastes. Her main focus was to update the cabinetry, fixtures and convert the bathtub into a shower that would be more accessible for ageing in place. Her favorite colors are neutral relaxing tones so that’s what we went with.
It was time to put the ideas down on paper so I took room measurements and presented my ideas though drawings of her room. After we agreed on the layout, we met at a showroom to pick out finishes. She took some floor, countertop, tile and cabinet finish samples home to see how they looked in her space and lighting. Nita enjoys the shopping process so she went on her own to pick out the faucets, grab bar, toilet, mirrors, and hardware. My only input there was to make sure what she chose all worked together.
The only difficulty we ran into on the project was finding out some pipes ran behind the tub/shower area exactly where I wanted to build in a shampoo niche. It would have been too cost prohibitive to move so we just relocated it to another wall but still incorporated a tile design over the pipe area for interest & decoration.
The new shower area now included a bench to sit on, grab bar, and shampoo niche. Frameless shower doors helped the small area appear larger. The door leading into the toiled area was switched to a pocket door for space saving, but had an opaque glass insert to allow light though.
The vanity area was all new and fresh, and the cabinets were now taller which have a bit more storage space. We replaced the full wall mirror with two separate framed mirrors. The opposite side where part of a closet was removed has improved storage for towels, toiletries, and a built in hamper. A vanity seating area was removed to make use for more cabinetry storage.
I met Lisa at a home tour in 2002 sponsored by San Diego American Society of Interior Decorators. My husband and I were planning a kitchen remodel and were struggling with what we wanted or even liked. We spoke with Lisa and she had some excellent ideas and solutions for us in just that brief conversation! It was an easy decision to have her design and oversee our kitchen remodel which was a complete gut and rebuild. People still compliment how beautiful our kitchen is and how easy it is to work in.
Lisa is wonderful to work with. Initially I was intimidated about using a designer as I thought they might be pushy and so protective of their own ideas that we would end up with something we didn’t like. Lisa was not pushy or overbearing. She came to our home and listened to what we had roughly envisioned in our mind. She gave us ideas and solutions so that we could realize that vision. She understood that we wanted to keep the integrity of a ranch style home and that overall our style was pretty conservative and safe. She would make suggestions and if we were uncomfortable or didn’t like the idea she didn’t push. It was great experience because we felt that she really wanted to give us what we wanted and made sure we were informed and consulted all along the way.
With Lisa’s excellent knowledge of products and numerous contacts with suppliers the process of shopping and making choices was fun and exciting. I enjoyed doing a lot the shopping myself but Lisa was always available when the bigger and pricier selections needed to be made.
With this great first remodeling experience it was a no-brainer to call her when we decided it was time to update our master bath and bedroom to help us “age” in place. We had the same great experience and are thrilled with the results.
We would recommend Lisa to anyone who is overwhelmed by the prospect of remodeling and needs help in navigating the process. She will help you pull all your thoughts, pictures and style into a beautiful as well as functional result that will still be receiving compliments years later.
